Greatest Show on Earth - Evolution I - 10/1/17

Summary

Evolution. That is, evolution is any change in the heritable traits within a population across generations, which means descent with modifications. Healthy living things can make copies of themselves. For example, A and B can mate and make AB, but if there is any change, then evolution has occurred. You can refer the Five Fingers of Evolution, to Mechanism of Evolution. The first finger or the pinky represents that population can shrink. For instance, if no one mates with C, then it will, so forth... The second or ring finger represents mating/sexual reproduction. This is where 2 mates have a baby(ies). The third or middle finger represents mutation - when there's a change in the DNA. The fourth or index finger represents movement/gene flow - when gene moves from one population to another. These four fingers are the cause of evolution. The last or the thumb represents natural selection. This is only one that can lead up to adaptations, and the best one that adapts to the environment. Microevolution is small change to help adapt, and macroevolution is a major change. Bottlenecking is the portion of the population that is randomly eliminated resulting in a population that reflects the genetics of the survivors. Founders effect is genetic of population reflect those of the initial member. The most important part of evolution, the Greatest Show on Earth is No Reproduction, No Evolution.

SP2 - Using models

To understand the learning of evolution, we did 2 labs this week both involving M&M's. For the first lab, we used M&M's and 5 Redhots. With M&M represent color candies organisms, we added redhots to show the mutation has occurred. Then, we took the same color candies with pairs and added the same color candy to represent their baby. For those without a pair, we took out. This shows that there some genes that will produce more than others. As you can see, I used models to understand the mutations in evolution.

XCC - Cause and Effect

Through this week, we learned about evolution through facts and labs. What happens during evolution? And why? In addition to what I said above about the Five Fingers of Evolution and effects... In genetic drift, when people who don't have a mate, they either become isolated on an island and form their own community (Founders Effect), or they will mate with different people and grow the population (Bottlenecking Effect). In mating, people will either mate with the same race, hair color, or appearance. If they do, it will increase the population of that race, hair color, and/or appearance. If they don't, they will create a mutation. For instance, if a person will black hair mates with a person with blonde hair, it will make a change in the DNA, and make brown hair. This will add on to what I said about gene flow. This will cause the baby to have another trait. Finally, natural selection. If you have a recessive trait or a trait that isn't well to blend in, you might not adapt to the environment as well. As you can see, this is what happens in evolution.

Multiplier

This week I was a wanderer because I found out many things after learning about the topic and doing labs.
