Music Industry Debate: Digital vs Analog

Music Industry Debate: Digital vs Analog

by: Victor N. 8B

The format I want to record my music is digital. There are so many upsides in recording music digitally rather recording my music in an analog format. I want to record my music in a digital format because it's so much easier and modern. But, my producer wants to do the opposite and record it in an analog format. To his point of view, I can see that digital has some cons that will be better in an analog format. However, I want to show that there are downsides of analog that are way worse than digital.

Recording music digitally has so many upsides. According to the Analogue Vs Digital:Advantages Vs Disadvantages Article, there are many pros and cons in recording in a digital or analog format. With digital, you can edit and manipulate the sounds easier. It's inexpensive, simpler, more space, and can save you lots of time. Yes, there are some downsides to the digital format, such as limitations and reliability. But there the downsides of analog are worse which makes digital more efficient. For example, in the article, it says that "There is also no undo button." That means if something were to happen, there's no way you can retrieve your recording if you lose it. In conclusion, there are so many upsides in recording music digitally that makes it so efficient.

Digital can save you a lot of time, money, and effort. The amount you put into a digital format won't be as much as an analog format but will still have the same outcome, sometimes even better. According to ANALOG, DIGITAL, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?, "Recording an album with analog technology can require a whole studio full of equipment, but with digital recording technology, it’s possible to record a whole album in a bedroom on a laptop. And whereas analog technology can wear out or be damaged, digital media can last for an indefinite length of time." This means that the amount of time and money you spend on an analog format, the outcome will still be the same and save you more time. As you can see, digital is time and money saving.

Furthermore, digital can make the sound have a better quality. Even though digital may not record all the information, digital can make music sound better. According to Anyone can sing with Autotune at 0:47, auto-tune can give people think that the music is good and give them another feeling and perspective. In addition, digital can make others interpret and understand the information better. According to the What is Analog Reading article, digital shows readings on an LCD, but for music, it can be easier processed. As you can see, digital can makes the sound have a better quality with manipulations.

My producer thinks that analog is a better format than analog. In a way, analog is better than digital. According to ANALOG, DIGITAL, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?, digital records snapshots of the information while analog records the original information with all the pieces. "While analog audio does give warmth and a truer sound quality, digital is cheaper to work with and offers more control over the finished product." This means that you could record the music in an analog format, but the quality of the music will be better on a digital format. I'm convincing my producer to record the music digitally because it's money and time saving. Also, most artists and producers record both analog and digital, but mainly digital because of the efficiency.

In conclusion, I want to record my music in a digital format because there are so many upsides to recording digitally. You can edit faster and much easier. You can manipulate the sounds using auto-tune. You can save lots of time, money, and effort when using a digital format. Even though analog is old, it's not a bad format. There are just some downsides that make digital better.
